CASE STUDY

Turning a broad technical capability into a clearer commercial platform

A broad capability that was difficult to explain

GPOT operated across multiple mining and energy services, products and supplier relationships, but the overall proposition lacked clarity.

Organise the business around customer needs

Clarify the commercial structure, define the major solution areas and create a more coherent market proposition.

Build the platform for growth

Management input, website, brand system, brochures, product literature, sales collateral and ongoing commercial communications.

General Petroleum Oil Tools

General Petroleum Oil Tools operates across mining, oil and gas, drilling, well services, gas drainage, engineering and field services, combining its own service capability with products and equipment sourced from global manufacturers and specialist suppliers. The business already had significant industry experience, established customers and a wide technical offering. The challenge was that breadth itself had become difficult to communicate.

GPOT was not simply a distributor, not simply a service company and not simply an equipment supplier. It sat across several categories at once, serving different operational requirements and customer groups.

Harry was contracted as General Manager, with a remit to optimise the business and pursue new commercial opportunities.

That meant looking beyond individual marketing assets and considering how the business itself was structured, presented and positioned for growth.

The problem

A strong business with a fragmented market story

GPOT had relationships, technical knowledge, international suppliers, specialised products and field capability across multiple parts of the resources sector.

But a company with that breadth can easily become difficult for the market to understand.

Different customers may encounter GPOT through entirely different needs:

  • drilling and well servicing

  • oil and gas products

  • gas drainage and dewatering

  • engineering and field services

  • specialist equipment

  • global supplier relationships

  • technical support

  • service and maintenance

The commercial challenge was therefore not simply to “market the company better”. It was to organise a complex offer so that customers could quickly understand: what GPOT does, where it operates, what it supplies, what it can solve, and why it should be trusted to do so.

The intervention

Optimise the business around opportunity

Harry worked at the management level to help optimise the company, assess new opportunities and strengthen the business around its commercial potential. That broader business work informed how the company subsequently presented itself to the market.

Rather than presenting GPOT as a catalogue of unrelated products, the business needed to communicate a more coherent idea: a solutions provider with specialist capability, industry knowledge and access to a strong global supplier network.

Reorganise the offer around customer needs

The market-facing structure was developed around major solution areas rather than around an undifferentiated list of products.

The website now separates the business into areas such as:

  • Oil & Gas

  • Drilling & Well Services

  • Gas Drainage & Dewatering

  • New Energy

  • Engineering & Field Services

That makes the breadth easier to navigate while still allowing individual products and suppliers to sit underneath the larger commercial story.

The supplier and partner network is treated as an asset in its own right, reinforcing GPOT's ability to bring specialist global products into Australian mining and energy applications.

Build the commercial communications system

As with GEM Projects, the work extended well beyond a website.

A broader communications platform was developed across:

  • complete website redevelopment

  • company positioning and messaging

  • service and solution architecture

  • corporate branding and visual system

  • brochures

  • product and capability literature

  • technical product specification sheets

  • sales collateral

  • supplier and partner communications

  • industry presentations

  • promotional material

  • ongoing marketing communications support

The purpose was consistency.

Whether a prospect encountered GPOT through a website, a product sheet, a supplier relationship, a presentation, or a direct sales conversation, the company needed to appear as one coherent business rather than a collection of technical products and services.

The result

A clearer platform for a more complex business

The work gave GPOT a stronger commercial framework for presenting a broad and technically diverse operation.

Customers could more easily understand the company at several levels:

  • the industries it serves

  • the problems it helps solve

  • the services it provides

  • the products it distributes

  • the global suppliers it represents

This was especially important because GPOT's value does not sit in any one product line. Its value comes from combining technical knowledge, service capability, equipment, supplier access and industry relationships into workable solutions for resources-sector clients.

The business therefore needed a commercial identity capable of holding all of those elements together.
